Questions & Answers

Content Verification & Expert Review
Product specifications and technical guidance on this page have been compiled by customer specialists Joy and Erno, verified by founder John Marlen-Summers, and fact-checked for engineering compliance by Enviromesh

How easy is it to assemble a gabion cage?

Very easy. No DIY experience is necessary. The cages are delivered flat-packed. To put them together, you simply lift up the corners and attach them using helicoils. It takes approximately 2-5 mins to complete

How many helicoil spirals do I need?

You will need x4 helicoils so that you can connect the corners. Select x5 if you wish to use a helicoils to close the lid. However, most people use the free lacing wire included with every order to close the lid.

Helicoils are sold in lengths of 1m. If the height of your cage does not match, you will need to cut the helicoil to size so that it fits correctly.

What accessories do I need?

  • Assembly: Every order includes free lacing wire,to connect the corners and lid, but most of our customers opt to use helicoils or clips to speed up assembly
  • Filling: Gabion stone is suitable for projects that require drainage, such as retaining walls. If your project does not require drainage, it is possible to fill with many types of material, including bricks, wood, glass and recycled bottles.
  • Drainage: If you are retaining earth, you should place a layer of geotextile between the basket and the earth. This will help prevent the soil from clogging up inside the cage.
  • Bulging: If your cages have a wire diameter of 3mm or 4mm and you would like to maintain a straight edge, you will need to carefully fill your basket with interlocking stones and select one or more of the following options:
  1. Backfilling panel – inserted into the middle of the cage. It will reduce the pressure against the external wall caused by the stone. They can also help to save money by backfilling the basket with non-decorative material such as rubble.
  2. Corner braces – will brace the corners together, reducing bulging caused by stone putting pressure against the outer wall.
  3. Internal bracing – will brace the front and back, reducing bulging caused by the stone putting pressure from the inside. Internal braces can be made using the free bracing wire that is included with each order.

On every product page, our ‘Frequently Bought Together’ section automatically calculates the essential and time-saving accessories for your cage. Please watch the video below for more info;

How do I create a curved gabion wall?

Use standard gabion baskets and angle each one slightly against the next, like slices of a cake. Place the first basket, then set the next one beside it so the backs touch and the fronts fan out to follow your curve. This leaves a small triangular gap between each pair of baskets. Join the touching corners with helicoils, fill the baskets with stone, and fill the triangular gaps with stone too. To give the top a neat, closed finish, cut a small piece of mesh panel to cover each gap and fix it with lacing wire. Shorter baskets (45cm or 97.5cm long) give a tighter, smoother curve. See our step-by-step guide to curved gabion walls.

What is Galfan-coated wire?

Galfan is an advanced anti-corrosion alloy composition consisting of 95% Zinc, 5% Aluminium, and trace Mischmetal. It is widely referred to as ‘triple life’ wire because its protection layer is estimated to provide up to 3x the corrosion resistance of standard galvanised coatings. Our entire range is manufactured using high-tensile steel wire Galfan-coated to BS EN 10244-2:2009 (Class A) standards, delivering an expected life of 50-120 years in mild inland conditions, based on BBA Certificate 05/4215.

For more information, please visit our certification and manufacturing page to download our full Galfan Coating Technical Specification PDFs.

How long will they last?

In normal inland conditions, our Galfan-coated baskets have an expected life of over 50 years (80+ years for 4mm and 5mm wire). PVC-coated baskets last up to 120 years and are the choice for coastal, salt-water or polluted sites. These figures come from BBA Certificate 05/4215, with wire coatings manufactured to British Class A corrosion protection standards (BS EN 10244-2:2009).

You can review our full BBA Certification & Technical Specification Guide for complete engineering data sheets.

Cheaper, uncertified imported alternatives use thinner zinc coatings and weaker welds, resulting in premature rusting, bulging, and a significantly reduced service life.

How do I fill them?
  • Choose hard, durable stone: Fill your gabion cages with angular quarried stone (80mm–200mm) that locks together naturally. Use our Gabion Stone Calculator to figure out your exact tonnage, which is also calculated automatically at checkout for you.
  • Using rounded stones or cobbles: Smooth stones roll against each other and push outward against the wire. If you’re using rounded stone, choose our thicker 4mm or 5mm wire to keep the front face from bulging.
  • Save money with hand-packing: Hand-stack attractive, decorative stones along the front face that people see, then backfill the hidden middle with cheaper hardcore, crushed concrete, or brick rubble (just ensure pieces are larger than the 75mm mesh grid or place into a rubble bag).

Do I need a Civil Engineer for my retaining wall?

If your gabion wall construction meets the following criteria, you will not require civil engineering:
  • The structure is lower than 1.5m tall
  • The structure is retaining flat earth
  • The structure is not retaining heavy loads such as roads or buildings
  • The ground does not have a lot of groundwater

You will need a Civil Engineer’s calculations if your structure meets the following criteria:

  • The structure is taller than 1.5m
  • The structure is retaining sloped earth
  • The structure is retaining heavy loads such as roads or buildings
  • The ground has a lot of groundwater

Pro Installation Tip: When building a retaining wall, step or lean the baskets back into the retained slope at a 6°–10° angle (1:10 batter). This uses gravity to resist earth pressure and prevents the wall from leaning forward over time.

If in doubt, we recommend that you double-check your project with a Civil Engineer.

For more detailed information: see our guide to designing and installing a gabion wall or use our gabion wall builder at the top of this page to help build and design a retaining or freestanding wall.

Do I need a concrete foundation for my gabion wall?

For most garden retaining walls, you do not need a poured concrete base. Gabion baskets are flexible, free-draining structures. Simply dig away loose topsoil down to firm ground, level the area, and lay a compacted 50mm–100mm sub-base of MOT Type 1 or hardcore to stop the baskets settling unevenly over time.  See our guide to building gabion walls for detailed information or use our gabion wall builder.

If your wall is retaining heavy loads such as property or roads, or you have a lot of groundwater or large sloping earth behind the wall, you should consult an engineer.

Can I use building rubble inside the cage?

Yes. A popular cost-saving method is “face-packing”: hand-stack attractive, angular stone along the visible front face, then backfill the interior and rear with recycled concrete or crushed brick rubble. Ensure all fill material is larger than the 75x75mm mesh aperture or place smaller rubble into porous rubble bags.

How should multi-tier walls be stacked (staggered vs. in-line)?

Both running bond (staggered like brickwork) and in-line (stack bond) layouts create strong, long-lasting walls. You can choose either option depending on the look you want to achieve:

  • Running Bond (Staggered): Staggering the vertical joints between layers is the traditional approach often seen in civil engineering drawings for heavy retaining walls. It helps spread ground pressure evenly across the baskets.
  • In-Line (Stack Bond): Stacking the gabion baskets directly on top of each other creates clean, modern vertical lines. This layout is extremely popular for garden boundaries, feature walls, and decorative cladding. Under CIRIA civil engineering standards (The Rock Manual C683), in-line stacking provides full structural strength because angular garden stone naturally interlocks inside the mesh cages, binding the entire wall into a single, solid mass.

Compliance & Quality Note: Our baskets are manufactured to BS EN 10223-8 standards and backed by independent BBA Certification (05/4215) for mesh strength and long-term durability. For standard garden retaining walls and freestanding structures up to 2 meters high, either stacking method provides complete stability when properly filled and braced. For commercial walls over 2 meters or steep bankings, follow your structural engineer’s site plans.

wall-installed
In-Line (Stack Bond): Clean, continuous vertical lines created by stacking basket corners directly on top of each other. This layout is widely preferred for architectural feature walls, garden cladding, and modern landscaping where a uniform appearance is key.

wall-installed-with-fencing
Staggered (Running Bond): Vertical joints are offset between courses in a traditional brickwork pattern. This configuration is commonly specified in civil engineering drawings for large mass gravity retaining walls to distribute earth pressure evenly across adjacent baskets.

Retaining-Wall
Combination Build: A practical site installation demonstrating how in-line and staggered layouts can be combined across different tiers. Both methods maintain full structural stability when filled with angular stone, allowing you to adapt the layout to your site’s dimensions.

retainig-wall
Single & Two-Course Garden Walls (Under 1.5m): For standard garden retaining walls up to 2 tiers high, structural joint patterns are far less critical. Either layout works effortlessly, allowing you to focus purely on achieving your desired visual finish.
