Understanding Mesh Configuration

FAQs

Can I use a barbed wire fence?

No, if the fence is constructed of barbed wire only it will likely cause injury as sheep have thick woolly coats that will get caught on barbed wire.  Your netting should be constructed with smooth wires.  Add barbed wire at the top and bottom to deter predators and prevent livestock from escaping.

What height does the mesh fence need to be?

1.2m tall.  If your netting is lower than 1m you can install a stand of tension wire or barbed wire at the top (view instructions) to increase the height.

How long will wire fencing last?

It depends on the level of abrasion that the netting is subjected to.  If the wire mesh is constantly being leaned on or chewed by large farm animals then the lifespan will shorten.  With minimal abrasion, you can expect decades of use.

How do I stop foxes and other predators from getting at my sheep?

If you have problems with predators getting at your livestock then you may need to add additional protection.  For example, to fully protect from foxes you will require 50mm holes and 2mm wire with a height of 1.8m.

Will it also stop dogs from getting in?

Yes, in most cases. 1.2m is usually tall enough to deter dogs from jumping over your fence.

However, the jumping and digging ability of dogs can range dramatically between breeds.  If an agile dog really wants to get into your field to get at your livestock it can clear up to 1.8m.

Can I add electrical fencing?

Yes, farmers often add electrical fencing to stop livestock from leaning on the fencing.  You may be required to display warning signs if your fence is near a right-of-way footpath.
