We needed to replace rotten sleepers raised beds, made from ~ 170m of them! With a volume of 30m2 that would have been two lorries of stone to fill a like-for-like replacement. We wanted to be green and avoid new aggregate as well as wanting to keep the planter design, so we have recycled drive paving bricks, collected from nine different households … all for free! This gave us ~4,000 bricks, different depths and colours, but by using the ‘bottom’ face as the visable side I think they work perfectly!
Making the double-brick walls using separater panels, tying the inner and outer walls together, cutting bricks, adding cross-panels, lining the inner walls, digging out and levelling the site, collecting the donated bricks 300 at a time means this isn’t a weekend job …. I estimate ~40 man-days, over the first four heat waves in the SE!
To allow existing raised patio to remain we had to fit existing gaps so ordered custom gabions from WireFence as well as numerous 2m x 2m wire mesh sheets for the bespoke separator and cross-panels panels. Ordering and speedy delivery was much appreciated.
We have no hesitation in recommending WireFence .. their gabions have supported an all-in project cost of £2,300.

I have installed the gabions as per my order, and they look great with the limestone. I will definitely use gabions in future landscape designs.

And apologies once more for the excess stone you have received; as we’ve been discussing via email, the extra leftovers must have been the result of a very lucky batch of stone with almost zero percentage of fines whereas normally each bag can contain up to 10%. I’m glad I was able to get the unused bag returned for you and get the issue resolved quickly though!
