Case Study: Gabion Project (by Matthew)

- Project: Gabion 3-in-1 Project
- Client: Matthew Preston
- Date: 28 August 2026
Project Background
Matthew had decided it was time to give his garden a complete refresh. After removing the old decking and clearing the patio area, he wanted to create something that would last, look good and make better use of the space.
Solution
Matthew used gabions alongside new stone paving to create the new patio area. The stone-filled gabions fit really well with the existing brickwork and give the garden a solid, natural look. The design is particularly versatile, with the gabions serving as seating, planters and a retaining wall.
Installation Process
The gabions were placed around the edge of the patio, creating a defined seating area while also adding planting space.
Final Result
The old patio has been turned into a much more useful and inviting part of the garden. The gabions add plenty of character while giving Matthew a practical feature that can be used in several different ways.
“This project is one of my favourites. It really does show how versatile gabions are – they can be a retaining wall, used as a seating area, and in the same build they can also be a planter.”
