How to Make a Gabion Wall – Case Study by Questmore Construction Ltd

Questmore Construction Ltd recently completed an outstanding project involving the installation of a substantial gabion retaining wall alongside an existing brick boundary. The process was recorded in a series of photographs, providing a clear insight into each stage from start to finish.
In this article, the full journey of the project can be seen – from the first clearing of the site to the final placement of the last gabion stone. This was the work of skilled and experienced professionals who applied technical expertise at every stage to ensure a precise, long-lasting result. The images not only document the transformation of the site but also highlight the level of care, planning, and craftsmanship that went into the build.
Site Survey & Access
The work began with a thorough site survey to assess the condition of the brick boundary wall and identify suitable access points for machinery, tools, and materials. Vegetation and obstructions were cleared to allow safe manoeuvring of equipment and to prepare the area for construction activities.
Preparing the Ground
Once the area was clear, the ground was carefully prepared. Uneven sections were levelled, loose soil was compacted, and remaining debris was removed. Proper ground preparation is a crucial step in gabion wall construction, as it ensures the stability of the foundation and reduces the risk of shifting over time.
Creating Foundation
A reinforced foundation was laid to provide a reliable structural base. Steel reinforcement mesh was installed, and the trench was prepared to exact specifications, ensuring the gabions could be placed securely and handle the load of the retained earth.
Installing the Gabions
For this project, 1 metre cube gabion baskets were used. A total of 97 units were purchased. The gabion cages were assembled and positioned along the wall line, then filled with stone to create a strong, interlocked retaining structure. The use of welded mesh ensured durability and resistance to deformation under load
Finished Gabion Wall
The completed wall offers both functional strength and an attractive appearance. The blend of the new gabions with the brick boundary results in a robust, long-lasting solution that requires minimal maintenance while complementing the surroundings.
