Case Study: Rabbit House (by Garden and Animal Structures)

Project Background

This installation was for a customer looking to provide their rabbits with a secure, permanent outdoor home that blended beautifully into their established garden while offering significantly more space than traditional rabbit hutches.

Solution

The completed housing combines a spacious timber shelter with a generous attached exercise run, allowing the rabbits continuous access between resting and active areas throughout the day.

For every rabbit house in our RWAF-approved range, we use Wire Fence stainless steel welded mesh with a 13mm × 13mm hole size and 16-gauge wire.

The smaller 13mm square mesh helps prevent rats, mice and other vermin from entering the enclosure, giving owners greater peace of mind while protecting the rabbits’ food and living environment.

The heavier 16-gauge wire provides excellent strength against potential predators while maintaining clear visibility and ventilation throughout the run.

We also chose stainless steel because it offers outstanding corrosion resistance and longevity. Unlike galvanised alternatives, stainless steel maintains its appearance over many years and provides a durable solution in all weather conditions. It also offers added reassurance for rabbits, which naturally investigate and chew many surfaces within their environment.

Using premium mesh means we can confidently build housing designed to last for many years while maintaining the high welfare standards expected from an RWAF Approved Manufacturer.

Installation Process

As with all of our projects, the rabbit house was manufactured in our workshop before being delivered and professionally installed on site.

The enclosure was carefully positioned within the customer’s landscaped garden to complement the surrounding planting while making the most of the available space.

Attention to detail during installation ensured the structure sat level, all mesh panels aligned perfectly, and every section of the enclosure was securely finished before handover.

Final Result

The completed rabbit house provides a secure, spacious and attractive outdoor environment where the rabbits can display natural behaviours such as running, exploring and moving freely between shelter and exercise areas.

About Garden and Animal Structures

Based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, Garden and Animal Structures is a family-run business founded by husband and wife team Ross and Sam Medlock. We specialise in designing and manufacturing premium outdoor wooden animal housing, including dog kennels, bird aviaries and bespoke enclosures for a wide variety of animals.

Every structure is handmade in our Staffordshire workshop before being professionally installed throughout the UK. Our focus has always been on creating housing that combines durability, practicality and animal welfare.

Following our recent approval as a Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) Approved Manufacturer, we developed an entirely new range of outdoor rabbit housing designed specifically to meet the welfare guidance promoted by both the RWAF and RSPCA.
