How to Attach Privacy Screen to Chain Link Fence

Below you will find a step by step guide on how to attach privacy screen to chain link fence.

  • Experience Required: Low
  • Tools Required: Protective gloves, Wire cutters, Tape measure
  • Materials Required: Cable ties, Privacy screen

Step 1) Measure Length

  • To determine the length of your privacy mesh, measure the distance from stretcher bar to stretcher bar.

Step 2) Measure Height

  • Measure the height from the top corner of the chain link diamond to about 10 cm above the ground, so the mesh cover doesn’t touch the ground and can be properly attached at the bottom.

Step 3) Roll Out the Screen

  • Begin the process of how to attach privacy screen to chain link fence by rolling out the mesh and laying it flat on the ground.
  • Make sure you are installing it on the same side of the fence as the chain link fabric.

Step 4) Secure Top Left Corner

  • Start at the top left corner.
  • Secure the corner grommet with two ties: one to the stretcher bar and one to the fabric.
  • The next grommet down goes to the stretcher bar, and the first grommet to the right is tied to the fabric, facing forward.

Step 5) Start Attaching the Top

  • Secure several grommets along the top line, always moving left to right.
  • Make sure the cable ties pull the screen forward in the direction you are working, not backward.
  • Keep it level.

Step 6) Secure the Left Side

  • Next, fasten the rest of the left side, securing each grommet to the stretcher bar from top to bottom.

Step 7) Secure the Bottom Left Corner

  • Secure the bottom left corner the same way as the top corner, with one tie to the stretcher bar and one to the fabric.

Step 8) Continue Along the Top

  • Continue working along the top edge, left to right, attaching the screen to the fabric and keeping it level.

Step 9) Secure the Bottom Line

  • Then secure the bottom edge in the same manner.

Step 10) Secure the Right Side

  • Finally, secure the right side of the mesh to the stretcher bar, working from top to bottom.

Step 11) Add Middle Supports

  • If the privacy screen has a middle row of grommets, secure them to the chain link fabric.
  • If it does not have middle grommets, push the cable tie through the screen fabric and around the chain link to prevent movement.
  • This helps reduce wind stress.

Step 12) Cut Off Excess Cable Ties

  • Cut off any excess cable ties with wire cutters to finish the installation.

Step 13) Finished Project

  • Your mesh cover is now securely installed and ready.

Step 14) Alternative: Connect Two Sections

  • If you need to connect two sections of privacy mesh, do not fasten them to each other.
  • Always secure each screen directly to the chain link fabric, never mesh to mesh.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Always install the mesh cover on the side where the chain link fabric is located.
  • Always attach the cable ties to the mesh.
  • Don’t skip any holes in the cover, each one must be secured with a tie.
  • Avoid installing in very windy conditions, as it makes the job much harder.
  • Do not overtighten the mesh cover, as this can cause wrinkles.
  • Always make sure the cable ties pull the cover forward in the direction you are working, not backward.
  • Use UV-resistant and weatherproof cable ties.
  • Check the cable ties regularly and replace any that are broken.
  • If the mesh cover has a middle row of holes, add ties there to help reduce wind stress.
  • If there are no grommets or eyelets, simply push the cable tie through the mesh and secure it around the chain link.
  • You can customize your look: these rolls of mesh material are available in multiple colors, patterns, or coverage percentages.
  • For added coverage, you can weave slats through the mesh links.
  • Attach bamboo or reed panels securely to the mesh for a natural look.
  • Use wooden panels for more solid coverage.
  • Plant climbing vines, shrubs, or hedges along the perimeter to create a natural privacy barrier over time.
