Deer Fencing Installation
Below you will find a step by step guide on deer fencing installation with different methods.
T POSTS
- Experience Required: Medium
- Tools Required: Protective gloves, Tape measure, Spade or hole digger, Level, Pliers, Bolt cutter, Fence stretcher
- Materials Required: T Posts, Reinforcement strut, Stock fencing, Wire ties, Concrete, Pegs
Step 1) Planning the Line
- Clear any obstacles, then plan your boundary line and decide where the gates will go.
- Next, mark the post locations, keeping posts 2-3 meters apart.
Step 2) Dig Post Holes
- Create post holes, digging about 50 cm deep into the ground.
Step 3) Set Posts in Concrete
- Set the posts in place and secure them with concrete.
- Before the concrete sets, use a level to make sure each post is straight and aligned in the same direction.
Step 4) Add Reinforcement Struts
- Align the reinforcement strut so its hole matches the second hole from the top of the post.
- Install the struts on all corner and end posts.
Step 5) Attach to First Post
- Use wire ties to fasten the wire to the first post, threading them through the pre-drilled holes.
Step 6) Unroll and Tighten
- Roll out the wire, then use a stretcher to tighten the wire between the ends.
Step 7) Attach to End Post
- Cut off any excess wire with a bolt cutter, secure it to the post like before, and then release the tension.
Step 8) Attach to Middle Poles
- Fasten the wire to the middle posts with wire ties to finish the deer fencing installation.
Step 9) Secure to Ground with Pegs
- To prevent deer from getting under the fence, secure the bottom to the ground with pegs spaced every 1-2 meters.

WOODEN POSTS
- Experience Required: Medium
- Tools Required: Protective gloves, Tape measure, Spade or hole digger, Level, Pliers, Bolt cutter, Fence stretcher
- Materials Required: Wooden posts, Stock fencing, Staples, Gravel, Pegs
Step 1) Plan & Measure
- Start your deer fence installation by planning your line, including gate locations, and removing any obstacles along the route.
- Measure and mark your post locations, spacing them 2-3 meters apart.
Step 2) Dig Post Holes
- Dig holes so that one-third of each post’s height will be buried in the ground.
Step 3) Set Posts In
- Position the posts, check that they are straight with a level, and add gravel at the base.
Step 4) Add Braces
- Install braces on all corner and end posts.
- For detailed instructions on post bracing, see our How to Brace a Fence Post blog.
Step 5) Secure to First Post
- Start by cutting the vertical wires at the first post.
- Next, wrap the horizontal wires tightly around the corner post and tie them securely with knots.
Step 6) Unroll and Pull It Tight
- After securing the starting point, unroll the wire toward the end post, maintaining tension between the posts.
Step 7) Secure to End Post
- Cut off any extra wire netting, then fasten it to the end post using the same wrapping method as earlier.
Step 8) Secure with Staples
- Once the wire is tight, secure it to each post using staples.
Step 9) Secure to Ground with Pegs
- Finally, peg the bottom of the fence to the ground every 1-2 m to stop deers from pushing underneath.

Further Tips on Deer Fencing Installation
- When planning how tall does a deer fence need to be, use a minimum height of 1.8 m, as they can easily jump lower structures.
- Install strong corner and end posts to support the structure.
- Secure the bottom, as deer may crawl under if there is a gap.
- Apply proper tension to the wire, but avoid over-tightening.
- On uneven terrain, follow the ground contours closely to prevent gaps.
- Plan gate locations early, and ensure each gate is the same height as the fence, with no gaps and strong latches.
- Consider adding electric offset wires for extra protection (optional but effective).
- Install the structure before planting crops, as deer quickly learn feeding patterns.
- Maintain regularly by keeping the structure stable, repairing damage, and tightening any loose wire.
