Project Background
The team at Inverclyde Shed has been transforming the grounds of St Laurence Orchard in Greenock into a welcoming community space where people can meet, learn new skills and enjoy the outdoors. The wider project has included restoring the orchard, improving accessibility and creating handcrafted features with the help of local volunteers.
As part of the next phase, the group wanted to build a series of durable gabion benches that would provide attractive seating areas for visitors while complementing the natural surroundings.
Solution
To create long-lasting, low-maintenance seating, the team chose gabion baskets filled with natural stone as the bench bases.
Installation Process
The benches were built almost entirely through the efforts of Inverclyde Shed‘s volunteers, who carefully assembled the gabions, filled them with stone and crafted the bespoke oak seating.
Final Result
The finished gabion benches provide robust, natural-looking seating that blends beautifully into the orchard landscape while creating practical spaces for visitors to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
It’s always a pleasure seeing our gabions become part of projects that bring people together, but this one felt especially meaningful. I particularly love the story behind the reclaimed red oak bench tops.
