Wire Fence Supports Wildwood Trust in Kent with £231.45 for Rehoming Chickens
Wire Fence recently supported Wildwood Trust with £231.45 worth of cost-price welded mesh to help build a secure enclosure for rescued chickens at their wildlife park in Kent.
About Wildwood Trust
Wildwood Trust is a conservation charity based in Kent, focused on the rewilding, preservation, and protection of British wildlife. The site is home to over 200 native species, many of which have been rescued or are part of breeding and reintroduction programmes. The Trust is recognised as a centre of excellence in conservation and education.
About the Project
The newly finished enclosure at Wildwood Trust has transformed life for eight rescued battery hens, offering them a safe and spacious environment after arriving in poor condition. The project came together thanks to support from local businesses and volunteers, with materials sourced from a range of donors.
The enclosure we had for the chickens and rabbits was okay, but if we wanted to rescue any chickens, we needed to make it bigger and better. So to have the opportunity to do that, to save the eight chickens we got, our Head of Section for the birds got in contact with a charity which rescues chickens from battery farms. So we were offered eight battery hens, which we took in. They came looking in a very bad way, underweight.
So we have built the new enclosure, and we reached out to local building firms, builders’ merchants for donations of wood, timber, roofing supplies, mesh from yourselves, and other things like fencing as well. Some of them were donated from helpful people like yourselves.
The strange thing is that we have European bison, wolves, bears and lynx – we’ve got all sorts of British wildlife here – but the chickens and the rabbits are a big hit with children. They love them. They are always on show.
[There are] Massive changes in the chickens – it’s quite obvious that they came from a poor environment. It is very clear, but all those things are over. It’s quite shocking actually, the condition they came in, but they are in better shape now. (So I warn you – the pictures are not a pretty sight.)
Marc Kirkbride, Head of Projects at Wildwood Trust.
Comment From Wildwood Trust
We wish we could take all of them, but we can’t, because what we have to do now is upkeep – we feed them, we clean their enclosure every day. So, you know, we have to foot the bill now for that. We have a keeper that looks after them, so that means we have to pay their wages, and for the food – the whole year, or for as long as we’ve got them. So it doesn’t just stop there with saving.
They will stay with us for the rest of their time. And we will keep doing this – we are not going to stop with just these eight, we will keep rescuing as many as we can. We don’t want to overcrowd their enclosure, because that would make it like the place they came from, so we will keep it to the eight for now and just see what happens.
We would love to thank you as well – you know, it’s actually brilliant what people do to help, because we are a charity, so it’s very much appreciated.
Marc Kirkbride, Head of Projects at Wildwood Trust.
Comment From Wirefence
We’re really pleased to support Wildwood Trust with the welded mesh. It’s wonderful to see how the new enclosure is already making a difference for the rescued hens and helping provide them with a safe, comfortable home. As someone who keeps chickens myself, I know how much care and love these little creatures need, so projects like this really resonate with me. It shows how small contributions can have a big impact, and we’re proud to be part of it.
