What is International Day of Forests?

This day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, people and organizations are encouraged to undertake local and national efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting initiatives, educational programs and many more.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21st March the International Day of Forests in 2012. For almost ten years now, this celebration has been creating awareness all over the world about the importance of forests.

Why are Forests so Important?

  • According to the Woodland Trust forests provide a stable habitat and food to a whole range of native mammals, birds, reptiles and many more.
  • Forests can help minimize climate change by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Trees also use the absorbed carbon to produce sugars for tree growth and they release the oxygen back into the air according to Forest Research.
  • Researches show that forests can be very beneficial to our physical and mental health. By visiting forests blood pressure and pulse rate can lower, and it can reduce cortisol levels according to Forestry England.

Results

Thanks to our customers we raised £297 for Wild Cat Wilderness to support their new Woodland Well-being Project.

The Wild Cat Wilderness is a community green space and food-growing garden coordinated by the Rushey Green Time Bank (RGTB) in Catford, Lewisham. Since September 2014, volunteers have transformed a neglected space into a thriving community space for volunteering, forest schools and therapeutic horticulture projects. Everything is centered on connecting people with nature; improving their wellbeing and helping people discover the environment.

We are developing a ‘Woodland for Wellbeing’ project to provide support for adults and children to help recovery from mental health problems, and help prevent the development of mental health issues, by working with nature. In the light of the rise in mental health problems due to Covid we are looking at the local need and developing this ‘green prescriptions’ program. We have been given permission to extend into the woodland area on our 5 acre site which hasn’t been touched for decades and we are looking to get funding to support this work. The International Day of Forests donation by Wire Fence is the first donation towards this new project. Thank you.
